Magnificent Mud!

What a wonderful mud kitchen morning we had yesterday in KB.  The children collected natural items to decorate their mudpies.  They measured using various kitchen tools and investigated how the soil changed as they added other items.  There was lots of intriguing oral language as they discussed their mudpies and mudcakes.

When we came inside, each child was invited to write the recipe for their mudpie to go along with their photo.  I am constantly reflecting on how to provide authentic and engaging writing experiences in kindergarten.  We have done some journal writing in the past but I have found that doing that regularly has taken writing away from purposeful and makes it feel more like a chore or an after-though in kindergarten.  Miss Rowe (our student teacher visiting from Nippissing for the week) and I noticed that all of the children were focused and excited to write their recipe.

A marvellous and muddy writing connection!
